CULTURAL POLICY: PRESERVATION AND / OR DEVELOPMENT?

November 18-19, 2017, Actor’s House, Nevsky prospect, 86, St. Petersburg

Dear friends and colleagues!

We kindly invite you to participate in a conference CULTURAL POLICY: PRESERVATION AND / OR DEVELOPMENT? organized in the framework of the ongoing project "Yufit Readings".

The project under the general title "Yufit Readings" was launched in 2001. It aims at the analysis of the cultural life of the country and the promotion of innovative projects in the sphere of culture. The project is dedicated to the memory of Anatoly Yufit - one of the founders of professional education in the field of art management in the USSR. Thanks to the joint initiative of Anatoly Yufit, at that time the Head of the Chair of the Russian Theater of the Leningrad Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography, and Boris Sorochkin, one of the rare not indifferent Soviet ministerial officials, in 1967 under auspices of the Chair there was founded the Laboratory of Economics and Organization of Theater, which later gave birth to the theater management educational  programs in a number of theatrical universities in the USSR. XVI "Yufitovskie readings" celebrate this important historical date of the national culture.

The conference will be held on November 18-19, 2017 as a part of the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum (Forum) http://culturalforum.ru/en.
This is the second appeal of the project organizers to the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum. In 2016, the conference within the framework of the "Yufit Readings" entitled "The Space of Cultural Policy" successfully took its place in the program of the "Theater" section. Cultural policy is an integral concept that encompasses all elements of the cultural environment and goes beyond the state regulation in the sphere of culture. In one way or another, it affects all aspects and interests of all players in the cultural process.

There are formulated the following questions for participants of the meeting:

- What is/should be at the center of cultural policy - preservation and/or development?

- Is the balance of preservation and development policy feasible?

- Is there and should there be a specific policy with respect to different sectors of the cultural sphere?

- who are the main subjects of cultural policy - the state, public organizations, ...?

On the 19th of November from 11.00 till 12.30, the organizers suggest to the participants of the Yufit Readings a study visit to the Anna Akhmatova museum at the Fountain House.

We invite to take part and contribute to the conference representatives of the cultural and arts institutions; Russian and foreign researches; creators; governmental cultural officers; specialists in the cultural education and students of the corresponding departments; and all those interested in the conference subjects.

Please, address your abstracts (up to 250 words) before the 20 October 2017 to:  Данный адрес e-mail защищен от спам-ботов, Вам необходимо включить Javascript для его просмотра.   and register to the Conference: https://goo.gl/forms/VwovCLcWWHTbigJ73

Yufit Assemblies has already addressed to the issues of cultural policy: one of the first conferences dealt with the cultural policies on the post-soviet space; the next time there was made an attempt to determine the status of the "Cultural Policy of Russia: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow." Since then almost ten years have passed and there have happened significant changes in the state cultural policy of Russia, both at the federal and regional and local levels. First of all, it is expressed in the transformation of the concept of interaction between different public authorities and the sphere of culture; it is reflected in the general and specialized federal and regional legislation, in the system of funding the sphere of culture. This process requires a special understanding - analysis of the current situation and forecast the trends for further development.

We suggest discussing the following questions:

- Changes in the Russian legislation and their impact on the cultural sphere.

- Questions of regional cultural policy of a country.

- Cultural policy and cultural diversity / diversity of cultural self-expressions.

- Cultural policy as welfare policy.

Conference

Leadership and Culture

21-22 March 2014, St. Petersburg

PROGRAM

Dear colleagues,

INTERSTUDIO-SPB is pleased to invite you to the international conference Leadership and Culture organized in cooperation with St. Petersburg Branch of the Theatre Union of Russia and with support of the Ministry of Culture of Russia.  The conference will be held in the framework of a permanent project Yufit Assemblies, launched in 2001 in memory of Anatoly Yufit (1925-1978) – one of the founders of professional education in the field of arts management in the USSR.

Meetings in the framework of Yufit Assemblies always aim both to modernity, to the issues of art management and cultural policy in Russia and abroad, as well as to preservation of the most effective traditional approaches .

The upcoming 13th conference is dedicated to one of the key factors in the functioning of the sphere of culture in general and any of its creative units in particular. In the cultural sphere, as nowhere else, the fate of the organization largely depends on the leader (creative and administrative). To the identification, formation and development of leadership at cultural organization, to his (her) interaction and interference with the creative team  are dedicated researches, college lectures. However, today there is a crisis of leadership that in culture is primarily manifests in the reluctance of many bright artistic personalities to take responsibility for the team (company), not just single individual projects. The purpose of the upcoming forum is to try to understand the causes of this crisis and to identify ways for its resolution.

At the conference the key presentations will make the experts in the field of developmental psychology and leadership in culture.

We suggest the following questions to be discussed at the conference:

- How to identify a true leader, what personal qualities and competencies distinguish it from a good manager?

- The leader must be born or can become? Is it possible to train to be a leader, or a leader should be raised?

- Can a leader exist without a team? What is the mutual influence of the leader and the team in the process of formation and activity?

- External and internal control and its impact on the Institute of leadership.

In addition, participants will make a study visit to the Alexandrinsky -2. New Stage of the Aleksandrinsky theatre – a modern theater and education center, consisting of three buildings: Small Stage, a media center and a school for the training of theater professionals ( http://www.theatreworks.ru/en/stage?id_project=124#photo_433).

At the Conference there will be also Presentation of the book Arts Leadership. International Case Studies.

We invite to take part and contribute to the conference representatives of the cultural and arts institutions; Russian and foreign researches; creators; governmental cultural officers; specialists in the cultural education; and all those interested in the conference subjects.

CONFERENCE

Tradition and Innovation in Arts Management

29-30 March 2013, St. Petersburg

PROGRAM

Dear colleagues,

INTERSTUDIO is pleased to invite you to the international conference Innovation and Tradition in Arts Management organized in cooperation with St. Petersburg Branch of the Theatre Union of Russia and with support of the Ministry of Culture of Russia and St. Petersburg Committee for Culture. The conference will be held in the framework of a permanent project Yufit Assemblies, launched in 2001 in memory of Anatoly Yufit (1925-1978) – one of the founders of professional education in the field of arts management in the USSR.

Conferences in the framework of the Yufit Assemblies have always been focused on the most important issues of arts management and cultural policy. Considerable discussion took place on the innovative practices of contemporary art managers, ways of their development and implementation at various levels and in different branches of culture. Conversation was built in line with the contemporary context, characterized by the desire for change and development of innovation.

Upcoming 12th conference is devoted to issues of relevance to all times - the co-existence of tradition and innovation, their interaction and mutual influence.

Today in the Russian culture there is a need of thoughtful analysis of the effectiveness of the introduction of different innovative management technologies and their use in combination with traditional methods and approaches. It is known that, for example, a theater industry is divided between those who want to reject the previous experience of the Russian repertory building-based theater, and those who are concerned about the gradual loss of this tradition. In museums and libraries there is hotly debated expansion of services of these institutions, which, according to some, threatens to fall from their original purpose, according to others - extends the capabilities of the institutions and their visitors / users.

In this regard, there are issues that are proposed for discussion at the conference:

- What is innovative for a modern art manager?

- What innovations are needed in the modern arts management?

- Stability and reactionary character of traditions;

- Interaction between tradition and innovation in management practices;

- Innovation and tradition in arts-management professional education.

We invite to take part and contribute to the conference representatives of the cultural and arts institutions; Russian and foreign researches; creators; governmental cultural officers; specialists in the cultural education; and all those interested in the conference subjects.

Further information and the registration form on this website www.interstudio.ru. The conference will take place in the Actors’ House – home of the St. Petersburg Organization of the Theatre Union of Russia.
If you are interested to contribute to this conference with presentation or speech, please, send an abstract (up to 200 words) before the 15 March 2013 to: Данный адрес e-mail защищен от спам-ботов, Вам необходимо включить Javascript для его просмотра. .

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Culture, Society, Business, Authorities: Issues of Interaction

24-25 March 2012

St. Petersburg

Dear colleagues,

INTERSTUDIO is pleased to invite you to the international conference Culture, Society, Business, Authorities: Issues of Interaction that is hold in cooperation with St. Petersburg Branch of the Theatre Union of Russia and with support of the Ministry of Culture of Russia.

This event continues a series of conferences on the current issues of cultural policy and arts management under the general title Yufit Assemblies, which had been launched in 2001 and is devoted to the memory of Anatoly Yufit (1925-1978) – the famous theatre researcher, who had initiated and in 1968 founded the first in the USSR program on the professional theatre management education.

Upcoming 11th conference starts a new count for these meetings. In the light of the Parliament and President elections Russia starts a new count as well. And as it happens in the run-up of the political changes (or not changes) cultural sphere recognizes keener interest both from the society and from the authorities. And this is natural- having more visibility and therefore the credibility, many artists can be invaluable in advancing a political party, an economic model of social change, etc.

In this context occurs a question of the limits for use of the key factors of culture to achieve various goals.

What are the goals of culture and where are theirs cross-points with goals of the other participants of the social life?

Can and should culture deal exclusively with artistic issues? Is existence of the “pure creativity” possible”?

What are the limits of intervention of government and society into culture?

Can and should culture be controllable?

On the other hand, modern reality more and more dictate to cultural sphere the necessity to seek for the partnerships with business field. Without such interaction can hardly happen a cultural event irrespectively to its scale.

What are the limits for the participation of business in forming of the cultural landscape?

Which multilateral partnerships are the most efficient in the different cultural areas?

And finally, “The objective justifies means?" is a question that reflects all the problems outlined above.

We invite to take part and contribute to the conference representatives of the cultural and arts institutions; Russian and foreign researches; creators; governmental cultural officers; specialists in the cultural education; representatives of business field and public organizations; students and all those interested in the conference subjects.

Conference provides translation for the English-speaking participants.

The conference will take place in the Actors’ House – home of the St. Petersburg Organization of the Theatre Union of Russia. Registration form and further conference information will be published at: www.interstudio.ru.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

What Next?

8-9 April 2011, St. Petersburg

Dear colleagues,

INTERSTUDIO is pleased to invite you to the international conference What  Next? that is hold in cooperation with St. Petersburg Branch of the Theatre Union of Russia  and with support of the Ministry of Culture of Russia and St. Petersburg Committee for Culture.

This event continues a series of conferences on the current issues of cultural and arts management under the general title Yufit Assemblies that had been launched in 2002 and is devoted to the memory of Anatoly Yufit (1925-1978) – the famous theatre researcher, who had initiated and in 1968 founded the first in the USSR program on the professional theatre management education.

Upcoming conference will be the 10th. For each of our previous nine annual conferences in a framework of the Yufit Assemblies we chose themes, which caused the response and interest of scholars and practitioners in the sphere of culture. And the 10th forum requires summing up some results. But each intermediate result is a starting point for the next stage. That is why we have called the conference What Next? and propose to discuss two related and important for cultural sphere blocks of problems:

1. Continuity in the Management
- What have we achieved that should be adopted, and which path leads to a dead end; what are strategy and tactics of behavior for the further development of culture?
- Nothing comes from nothing; everything is interconnected, but how to transfer knowledge, experience, value system and vision of the strategy to the succeeding generations of managers in the field of culture? And is it possible?

2. Result in culture

Currently, the focus of some cultural policies is shifting from managing costs to managing results. This certainly pleases. But the notion of "result" in the cultural sector has an ambiguous interpretation, and the different players at the cultural field understand it differently, depending on their specific goals.
- What is the “cultural result” and does it exist?
- What are the quantitative and qualitative performance indicators and measurement criteria of "cultural result”?
- What result is achievable for one generation of managers, and what will give effect only in the long run?

We invite to take part and contribute to the conference representatives of the cultural and arts institutions; Russian and foreign researches; creators; governmental cultural officers; specialists in the cultural education; and all those interested in the conference subjects.

The conference will take place in the Actors’ House – home of the St. Petersburg Organization of the Theatre Union of Russia. Further conference information will be published at this web site.

If you are interested to contribute to this conference with presentation or speech, please, send an abstract (up to 200 words) before the 24 March 2011 to: Данный адрес e-mail защищен от спам-ботов, Вам необходимо включить Javascript для его просмотра.
